Tater Tot pageant coming to East Tennessee

An East Tennessee fair will be packed with plenty of hopeful tube-shaped potatoes from across the state in September as they compete for numerous titles in the state's first annual Tater Tot Pageant.

"We have contestants coming from all over the state," event coordinator and pageant director Anita Carstenbrock said. She added that the pageant committee is still accepting applications from hopeful deep-fried tubers. "Any tater tot from the state of Tennessee can compete."

The grated potatoes will be competing in different areas and will be judged by a panel of experts who are familiar with the world of potato pageantry.

"We are very excited to have some prestigious judges coming to our event," said Carstenbrock. "Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head are just two of our celebrity judges this year."

The spud who is crowned Miss Tater Tot 2013 will receive a dab of ketchup, a sprinkling of salt and will be promptly popped into the mouth of a hungry fairgoer.

"This is not a 'Tater Tots and Tiaras' type of a pageant," said organizer Jenni Myers. "We're not interested in flashy fake nails and eyelashes. Our judges will be looking at the overall quality of the taters and not just at their outward appearance. "

"These precious tater tots will be judged by what's on the inside as well as what's on the outside," added Carstenbrock. "Pageants are a great experience for tater tots because it gives them a tremendous amount of confidence. This pageant is going to be an amazing experience for everyone who attends."

The pageant will consist of three rounds.

"The first round, of course, will be the gown," said Carstenbrock. "The second part of the contest will be the talent portion of the evening, and let me tell you we have some very talented potatoes this year. The third round will be an outfit of choice, where the taters can wear whatever they want to impress the judges."

The event will be held Friday, Sept. 13 and is open to the public.
